THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN VALENTINO AND SLEEP NO MORE ESTABLISHES A NEW STANDARD FOR EXPERIENTAL MARKETING

Valentino’s collaboration with Sleep No More sets a new standard for experiential marketing. Last September, Valentino launched its Pink PP Fall 2022-23 campaign in Qinhuangdao’s Aranya district, and now, just six months later, the luxury brand presents its Unboxing Valentino Spring/Summer 2023 collection in partnership with Sleep No More, a cutting-edge immersive theater experience. The collection captures the essence of the post-pandemic era with minimal silhouettes, neutral tones, and pops of color, appealing to young Chinese consumers who value freedom and individuality.

The collaboration involves co-creating a full-length immersive theater production titled The Box, with Sleep No More’s scriptwriters and artists drawing inspiration from Unboxing Valentino concepts and dedicated to the collection. The one-night only performance premiered on April 11, 2023, and aims to establish brand loyalty by providing an intimate and connected offline theatrical experience in an increasingly digitalized world.

Valentino’s collaboration with Sleep No More is a unique intersection of theater and fashion, inviting the audience to create their own film noir journey by freely moving through the immersive theater production. This aligns with the top consumer trend of focusing on the “Me Mentality,” where consumers seek personalized experiences and brands can help them take center stage. By combining fashion with theatrical art forms, Valentino brings its collection to life in fresh contexts and highlights its very important clients (VICs) and key opinion leaders (KOLs). The collaboration also celebrates localization, as Valentino emphasizes its cultural localization strategy and taps into the growing passion for theater among young Chinese urbanites. This is reflected in the bespoke synopsis set in 1930s Shanghai, adding deeper resonance to the interpretation of Unboxing Valentino for the local market. The localization approach extends to the shopping experience, with Chinese celebrity stylist Mix Wei curating the window front of Valentino’s Shanghai IFC boutique, as part of the “Global Unboxing” campaign that spans across eight global cities and an online destination.

Valentino’s rapid expansion in the Chinese market, re-positioning as a top luxury fashion brand, and its commitment to further push into the market with the appointment of Janice Lam as CEO for Greater China in 2022 and planned store reopenings in 2023, aligns with the forecasted growth of China’s luxury sector. McKinsey’s The State of Fashion 2023 report predicts a growth of 9-14 percent in China’s luxury sector in 2023. Valentino’s collaboration with Sleep No More not only showcases its dedication to experiential marketing and brand localization, but also its understanding of the evolving consumer landscape and its strategic approach to capture the attention and loyalty of young Chinese consumers.
